Liposuction of the Chin and Neck

With age, weight, or simply genetics, people can develop a collection of fat underneath the chin. Some people call this a “double chin”. Liposuction can remove these fat deposits which diet and exercise have been unable to improve. The procedure to remove the fat is performed with small specialized metal tubes which are inserted through very small incisions, (each less than 3mm). These incisions are disguised in the areas just behind the earlobe and beneath the chin. The cannulas are attached to a suction device which generally removes the fat. The areas are made numb by the infusion of a very dilute anesthetic solution using a “tumescent technique”. In addition to the local anesthetic, patients receive sedation and experience little or no discomfort. The procedure itself will take approximately 30 minutes to perform. In addition to removing the fat deposit beneath the chin, additional liposuction is performed in the neck to sculpt and define the jaw line.

The amount of fat removed will vary from individual but typically ranges from 50 to 100cc. Upon completion of the procedure an elastic garment will be placed and worn for the next 2-3 days. Patients may experience swelling and bruising around the neck which will gradually clear. You will notice an immediate effect upon removal of the elastic garment but will reach their final correction in a few weeks. Although the procedure originally was designed for patients with good tone in the neck, significant improvement can be seen in patients who are in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This procedure is often combined with a facelift, but can be performed as a separate procedure.
