Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

Studies have shown that when others look at us, our eyes are the first things they notice. Unfortunately, it is also one of the earliest areas to show the effects of aging. Others interpret hooded skin on the upper lids or fullness in the lower lids as fatigue, illness or worse. The removal of this excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower lids help restore a more youthful, rested appearance.

Blepharoplasty is the second most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. Patients have reported receiving comments that they look like they are “taking better care of themselves” or “getting more sleep” after their surgery.

Dr. Berris is recognized as an expert in eyelid surgery and has taught his surgical techniques to physicians at the University of California, Davis for two decades. He has performed over 15,000 eyelid surgeries in his career. His philosophy is to provide a natural enhancement to your appearance without looking “done”. Dr. Berris will individualize the procedure for each patient’s specific problem and goals.

An upper eyelid surgery procedure will take less than one hour. Incisions are made along the natural crease of the lid. The excess skin, muscle and fat are removed and the incision line closed with tiny sutures. The eyes are not bandaged and the patient will apply cold compresses over the eyes for the first 2 days. The sutures will be removed in 5-7 days, and by the morning after surgery, the eyes will feel comfortable. Most patients will experience some bruising which can last about 10-14 days.

Lower lid surgery requires more finesse and expertise. Aging changes may include loose skin, herniation of fat and possible loss of lid tone. The surgery may require repositioning of the fat to help deal with the “dark circles” under the eyes. Some patients require additional support be provided to the lid. This surgery takes somewhat longer than upper lid surgery because of these additional steps and the fees are consequently slightly higher.

Our blepharoplasty procedures are performed in the privacy of our own accredited surgical suite with either oral or IV sedation. Our fees include not only the surgery, operating room, sedation and nursing, but also most if not all medication required. Patients will need to have a ride home the day of surgery, but they can drive themselves back to the office to have the sutures removed.
