If you’re about to undergo an eyelid lift from The Center for Cosmetic Eyelid & Laser Surgery in Sacramento, it’s important to have as much information as possible before you go into the surgery. The recovery and aftercare following your eyelid lift are important for your results. Our Sacramento plastic surgeon is here to provide you with all the information you need about eyelid lift recovery and aftercare.

Eyelid Surgery What to Expect Afterwards

Although uncommon, some patients may require an overnight stay at a hospital following their eyelid lift surgery. Your plastic surgeon will determine the best environment for your recovery period. In most cases, you will just be sent home to rest. You can expect for there to be swelling and redness near the incision sites. You can also expect for your eyes to tear more excessively than usual. If any dryness occurs near the eye area, this can be alleviated with an ointment that we provide for you.

It’s common to experience a blurring of vision after the surgery. This is a side effect of the surgery as well as using the ointment. Your recovery may also leave you feeling sensitive to light. This is temporary.

Eyelid Lift Aftercare

A part of your eyelid lift recovery and aftercare includes taking good care of your incision sites. You will notice that your eyelids feel sore following the surgery. We recommend that you keep the incisions lubricated with the ointment we provide for you. You can also apply a cold compress to your eyes to help with the swelling. Lastly, eye drops can be used to prevent eye drying.

During the first week after your eyelid lift, you should avoid activities that can dry up your eyes. This includes reading, watching tv, using a computer or even wearing contacts. You can minimize swelling and bruising by keeping your head elevated as much as possible following the first few days. Your stitches will be removed during the first 2 to 7 days. We recommend wearing dark sunglasses for the first couple of weeks following surgery.

By the tenth day of recovery, many patients feel well enough to continue their everyday activities. We recommend not doing any activities that increase blood flow to the eyes like bending, sporting activities, crying and lifting. Your Sacramento plastic surgeon will notify you when it’s safe to resume physical activities.

Your recovery period takes several weeks. Many patients return to work 10 days after surgery. However, the complete recovery process varies per patient. Some take a few weeks while others might take longer.
