Do you have wrinkles or fine lines around your mouth or eyes, or on your forehead? What about acne scars or skin that fails to respond after a facelift? If any of this sounds like you, then you could benefit from laser resurfacing.

Now, having said that, if your acne is an active stage, or if your skin is very dark, you might not be a candidate. Additionally, although scars will respond to laser resurfacing, this is not the case when the scars are actually stretch marks. You should consult with your doctor or plastic surgeon before deciding to go ahead with a laser resurfacing treatment.

The most common type of laser is the CO2 laser. It works to vaporize skin cells at the surface, but there are differences between the two.

The CO2 laser has been in use for years to treat scars, wrinkles, warts, and even enlarged oil glands. In its newest incarnation, it makes use of short pulses of laser light to lift thin skin layers without offering a whole lot of heat. With this type of treatment, you can expect to feel a bit of discomfort for a couple of weeks.

Another type of laser is the erbium laser. It also works on surface issues, but goes deeper to erase deep wrinkles and lines. It actually also has fewer side effects than the CO2 laser. You will not experience any of the redness, swelling or burning that you will with the CO2 laser, so your recovery will likely happen in just a week. The erbium laser also works better on dark skin.
